A trip back in time to the Sixties and the place and style that founded the popular music genre for the next years, The Mersey Beat which took its name from a newspaper started in July 1961. Bill Harry derived the name from an allusion to a policeman’s beat. The city of Liverpool was already a melting pot of musical talent, with a cosmopolitan population including a large number from Ireland, and much musical influence coming direct off the transatlantic ships whose crews would bring in records from the US.
It was the era of three-minute (or less) singles, and so we had a lot of tracks in the show. Up to 20 listener connections, which was a good number for a decidedly niche show.
