057R Not Your Average Christmas Music

Remastered from five years ago and not showing its age at all, a fine selection of Christmas music for children of all ages.  It was appreciated by a slightly larger audience than the first time around too, which was very gratifying.

The Modern Jazz Quartet

This week’s show offers a look at the Modern Jazz Quartet, formed in 1952 and going until 1997. A development of Dizzie Gillespie’s backing band, the group centred around the vibraphone as the lead instrument, making for a unique sound.

Rarities and What-Ifs, pt. 3 remastered

This week, we’ll repeat ourselves with the third set of rare tracks and bits with a back story that originally aired six and a half years ago. Quite a diverse collection, too, even if we say so ourselves.

186 Robert Wyatt

A lovely set confirming our commitment to bring you something different, out of the multiple stashes and overlapping preferences of our contributors. Robert Wyatt has a very rich catalog to draw from, covering a much wider range than almost anybody else. We did our best to hit the high points, and more than twenty of you agreed with us.

056R Difficult Times Remastered

A show from five years ago, and at a point when we were getting really pretty good at doing this.  Dialog tightened up and the show trimmed for length, cutting two Dave Brubeck tracks.  We had a lot of those already.    Our first broadcast of the show had 20 listeners, and we broke that with 21 this time – a nice milestone

Here’s the playlist, and a link to the lyrics for Rush’s Losing It, as requested earlier (click on the track title)

Unsquare Dance is possibly the second most famous Dave Brubeck track after Take Five. Klaus Doldinger’s Timesignature is the sleeper here – it is in common time, but has the relevant title…

Postshow

Aretha’s version of Say A Little Prayer is the second best, after the Dionne Warwick original.

Unsquare Dance is possibly the second most famous Dave Brubeck track after Take Five.

Vix 9 is by Bela Fleck and the Wooten brothers, Victor on bass and Roy “Futureman” Wooten on drumitar, his own drum controller made in roughly the shape of a guitar.   Bela Fleck is playing an electric banjo and synth pedals, and the live video of them playing this on Youtube is very impressive to watch.

Difficult Times, remastered

This week’s remastered show will be our first look at unusual time signatures, excluding the cheap 3/4 time. We will have something in almost every odd time signature from 2/4 all the way up to 19/16 changing to 7/4, and the title of that track will mislead many to believe it is by a different band and featuring an opener in 13/4 played over 4/4… but that is for another show on the same theme to resolve.
