68 A Bad Year for Good Music IV. George Martin
Show 68 was a celebration and a fast trip through the musical career of George Martin, the ‘fifth Beatle’
A man who became the head of the Parlophone label when it was EMI’s second string and turned it around with a wide range of artists, chief of which were The Beatles. A musician too, who played keyboards on all the early Beatles tracks, and wrote, arranged and conducted orchestral accompaniment, as well as film scores and other works.
Preshow was from the stash, where we have reached F – in this case Focus and Free.
Postshow contained tracks cut from the main show for time – there’s a lot of George Martin out there for you still to discover.
It has been suggested that a History of The Beatles might be well accepted – what do you think?

67 Unexpected Instrumentals
The show was mainly about instrumentals that had been made by vocal bands, with a few others that were unexpected in other ways.
The preshow was all tracks that missed out on being in the main show, because they were’nt unexpected enough or because we’d played them recently. The version of Soul Sscrifice from Woodstock contains the best drum solo that Mike Shrieve ever recorded, which must have been a bit of an albatross for his subsequent career – he was just 19 at the time.

66 Songs That Get Under Your Skin
This was an idea I’d been working on for a while, with alternative titles such as ‘Songs I can’t sing’ – because I can’t get through them without choking up. Eventually we made it to air, but to remember (slightly too late) that May 1st is a holiday throughout Europe and most of our audience could well be in their garden having a barbecue… Even so we had up to 23 listeners with 17 most of the time, which is very pleasing.
Pre and post-show were thrown together at the last minute from things that had not quite made it into recent shows.
This show was surprisingly hard to present. As the last track in the postshow says, one of these days I’ll get an early night…

65 A Bad Year for Good Music III – Dave Swarbrick
Broadcast on Easter Sunday, proving that none of us looked at the public holiday dates before we announced the show time… Nevertheless, a maximum of 29 with 22 – 24 all the way through. Thank you all for listening, and this time it was something away from the mainstream. Our skipping trip through Dave Swarbrick’s career seemed to go down well. Here is the playlist.

64 A Bad Year for Good Music 2: Robert Stigwood
A good crowd joined us to remember the career of Robert Stigwood and the artists and shows that he was responsible for.
He more or less invented the role independent record producer, changing the way that popular music was created and marketed, and was an important part of the development of both bands and shows that achieved worldwide recognition.
Radio Free D’ni isn’t quite in that league, but we did have up to 30 listeners, with about half of you with us on the plaza.
Pre and post show music consisted of items that had not made the cut for the show – and there were plenty of them, too.

Magic Light show, Kadish Tolesa, Spring 2017
Yoda put on another light show for us in Magic Tolesa and we followed up with a dance party, as is traditional 🙂 The Kadish bay was a great place for the light show, with lots of space for the audience to spread out along and a big flat area to perform on. The dance afterwards made use of one of the best dance floors in MOUL, the interior of the pyramid puzzle building.
The light show was accompanied by music from Malcolm Cecil, Robert Margouleff and the TONTO synthesiser, one of those unique electronic instruments that in fact turns up all over the place, but only credited in the small print, if at all.

Saint Patrick’s Day 2017
Radio Free D’ni provided some of the music for the St. Patrick’s Day parade and post-parade bop, and here is the playlist :).
The preshow was, as usual, designed to let people find the broadcast channel and get tuned in to the music. Unfortunately, I had not created the playlists, and doing so took up so much processing power that the channel dropped out for most people. However, I promised not to do that again, and the listeners returned… at one point, 43 folks were listening, more than were in the cavern, and we still had 27 on line when I handed over to Joker at 15 KI.

International Women’s Day 2017
For IWD 2017 Radio Free D’ni presented a four-hour show of music by female artists, presented by Root Beer with AlanDJ, Malaclypse and Edison Rex. Hummingbird was with us on the plaza, and delivered some reminders of what the day was about, and biographical details of significant women, some famous and others not so. In addition, Ghaelen D’Lareh (who could not be with us due to other commitments) contributed a spoken piece about Mary Woolstonecroft and Mary Shelley.
We had over 35 listeners for the majority of the show, with a peak of 43 – Do join us again 🙂
