  • The History of Creedence Clearwater Revival

As announced earlier, on Sunday we will present the history of CCR, from their beginning to the band’s untimely end. In the pre- and post-show bits there will be some rare live takes by the band, and solo material by John Fogerty. One of the shortest careers of any major Rock band, during their five years of existence, CCR have helped create the genre of modern Hard Rock, as well as their very own style, which was later titled Swamp Rock and given its epitaph by Southern Rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd with their song “Swamp Music,” commemorating the disbanding of CCR a year earlier. Did you ever wonder how such a successful band could go down the drain so quickly? Listen in and you’ll find out 🙂

  • 68 A Bad Year for Good Music IV. George Martin

Show 68 was a celebration and a fast trip through the musical career of George Martin, the ‘fifth Beatle’

A man who became the head of the Parlophone label when it was EMI’s second string and turned it around with a wide range of artists, chief of which were The Beatles. A musician too, who played keyboards on all the early Beatles tracks, and wrote, arranged and conducted orchestral accompaniment, as well as film scores and other works.

Preshow was from the stash, where we have reached F – in this case Focus and Free.

Postshow contained tracks cut from the main show for time – there’s a lot of George Martin out there for you still to discover.

It has been suggested that a History of The Beatles might be well accepted – what do you think?

  • A Bad Year for Good Music pt. IV

This Sunday it is all about George Martin, legendary producer and studio boss, who died in 2016. One of the most successful producers ever, with #1 hits through three consecutive decades (one of only three producers to have managed that), he had a long career, famously producing The Beatles in the 1960s, among many others.

  • 67 Unexpected Instrumentals

The show was mainly about instrumentals that had been made by vocal bands, with a few others that were unexpected in other ways.

The preshow was all tracks that missed out on being in the main show, because they were’nt unexpected enough or because we’d played them recently.  The version of Soul Sscrifice from Woodstock contains the best drum solo that Mike Shrieve ever recorded, which must have been a bit of an albatross for his subsequent career – he was just 19 at the time.

  • Unexpected Instrumentals

On May 14th, we will present Unexpected Instrumentals, being a selection of instrumental pieces by bands which are not renowned for doing them, or which are so different from what the bands are known for that it really is quite unexpected. Might be a few surprises in there 🙂

  • 66 Songs That Get Under Your Skin

This was an idea I’d been working on for a while, with alternative titles such as ‘Songs I can’t sing’ – because I can’t get through them without choking up.  Eventually we made it to air, but to remember (slightly too late) that May 1st is a holiday throughout Europe and most of our audience could well be in their garden having a barbecue…  Even so we had up to 23 listeners with 17 most of the time, which is very pleasing.

Pre and post-show were thrown together at the last minute from things that had not quite made it into recent shows.

This show was surprisingly hard to present.  As the last track in the postshow says, one of these days I’ll get an early night…

Our theme for the next show (Sunday 30th April) will be Songs That Get Under Your Skin.  A personal choice from each of us here on Radio Free D’ni of songs that we find have affected us deeply, and in unexpected ways.

For my part, there could be something from Rush, The Albion Band, Fairport Convention, Sade, Amazing Blondel, John D Loudermilk and Alex Glasgow.  Come along and hear the tracks that get to us…
