The Connections
The line of connections from the show:
The Rolling Stones → Ronnie Wood (member) → The Faces → Rod Steward (member) → The Jeff Beck Group (Wood and Steward both members) → Jeff Beck → Yardbirds (Jeff Beck member) → Yardbirds (Eric Clapton member) → The Beatles (Eric Clapton playing on “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”) → Billy Preston (played with the Beatles on final album) → The Rolling Stones (Preston member 1970-1977).
Eric Clapton → Blind Faith (Clapton member) → Steve Winwood (member) → David Gilmour (Winwood played on solo album) → Supertramp (Gilmour guitar solos on “Brother Where You Bound”) → Thin Lizzy/Pink Floyd: Scott Gorham (guitar on “BWYB”) and Scott Page (Flute on “BWYB” and sax on “The Dogs of War”) → Jeff Porcaro (drums on “Mother”) → Toto (Porcaro member) → Jim Horn (woodwinds on album Toto IV) → Canned Heat (Horn on flute)/The Beach Boys (Horn on baritone sax) → Ringo Starr (drums on “California Calling”) → Paul McCartney (Starr drums on album Give My Regards to Broad Street) → Dave Edmunds (guitars on GMRtBS and playing with McCartney on the tour). And we’ll pick up with Edmunds for the next Connections show.
There are quite a few side notes there, too: Clapton left Yardbirds to join John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, was replaced by Jeff Beck, who was joined in Yardbirds by Jimmy Page. After Beck left, the Yardbirds name could no longer be used (legal reasons) and Page and Plant wanted to go Hard Rock anyway, so renamed the leftovers of the Group Led Zeppelin.
Clapton left Bluesbreakers to form Cream, and was replaced with Peter Green, who went on to form Fleetwood Mac.
Cream broke up, and Clapton formed Blind Faith with Peter Baker. Clapton left Blind Faith to play with Delaney and Bonnie and Friends, who ended up playing on Clapton’s first solo album as the band before breaking up, leaving Clapton to pursue his solo career.
Jim Horn is a bit of a deus ex machina: Having been part of the group of L.A. session musicians who were informally called “The Wrecking Crew” in the mid-1960s, he has played on just about everything and with just about every group that anybody can remember. So… that’s a bunch of connections I may come back to in case I run into a dead end during research.
Also, on McCartney’s album “Give My Regards to Broad Street,” we can hear Dave Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and Steve Lukather (Toto) as well as Chris Spedding on guitars alongside Dave Edmunds and McCartney himself.
There are a lot more connections going sideways from the ones we explored in this show, but there is only so much one can cover in two hours of air time, and I believe what we did cover was already convoluted enough.
See you in the Cavern,

48 Connections 1 – The Clapton Complex
A new idea here, to explore by means of songs the connections between various artists and albums. At the center of this first collection is Eric Clapton, but the connections are sometimes not obvious. Mal has now posted a little bit more of his research findings…
Preshow and postshow continue the theme with more related tracks.
16 listeners for the majority of the show with a peak of 25 and 23 at the end. I think lots of people were enjoying the holidays and only joined us later – but that’s fine, as long as you were entertained.
As there were several folks wanting more, I carried on with some stuff from my stash in a post-postshow show. I managed a peak of 14 listeners with 9 for most of the time, despite you having to restart your music player and re-find the stream. Some people reported that if they used the Urutunes link, they got a repeat of the just-broadcast show, whereas if they used the link from the radiofreedni.org site (this site) they got the new stream. We must investigate.

Connections I: The Clapton Complex
Our next show will be “Connections,” taking a look at how musicians, producers, songwriters etc. are interconnected behind the scenes and across the decades, with probably quite a few surprises in there. As a friend and former singer for one of my bands put it, “it’s all one cantankerous family…”
Update July 22, 2016: the playlist and notes are done, earlier than I expected, but what a trip through the history of Rock, and we got diverted into a few unexpected directions. I predict this is going to be a very interesting show!

47 Road Songs
Broadcast 10th July 2016.
The theme here was cars, road transport, road trips and the people you might meet. 20 listeners for most of the show with a peak of 23. We have lots more tracks in the same vein, and could well put another show like this together shortly.

The History of Pink Floyd, Part II
The History of Pink Floyd, Part II, is currently expected to be broadcast as our next show, on June 26th. As of now, this will include the development from Atom Heart Mother (1970) up to Wish You Were Here (1975), with some audio footage from the Live at Pompeii show, which was recorded live at Pompeii (d’oh!) in 1971, for French and German television, without a live audience.
See you in the Cavern,

45 Themes 2
Broadcast 12th June, 2016
A second show of TV themes (mostly) because I found I’d missed one really important one out (the BBC Film night one, from Billy Taylor).
I have added links to sites for each of the shows, and also for the lyrics to the two songs sung in Geordie which confounded the audience a little. Sorry about that – it would be my native accent if I retained one.
A peak of 24 listeners – very pleasing.

Welcome to Radio Free D’ni!
Welcome to the homepage of Radio Free D’ni. You will find here both our current announcements and our past playlists. Our links to the music stream are at the top, just above this post. And there’s a stream player right here (mind you, it’ll only play anything when the stream is on).
Generally speaking, we present a new show every other week, at 1300 KI time, with remastered versions of our shows from five years ago in the intermediate weeks. We have pre-show music usually starting 30 minutes earlier (so getting on the stream at 12:30 KI time might be a good idea), and also a good bit of music after the show proper.
See you in the Cavern
Malaclypse
13:00 KI is 8 pm in the UK, 9 pm in CET. KI time is Mountain Time in the US, and it follows DST… I can only assume that when Victor Laxman got the KI’s working again he synch’d them to surface time in New Mexico…
