  • No-Filler Albums

On March 5th, we will present a selection of tracks from albums that have no filler on them. Those albums are both rarer, and more frequent than might be expected: some of the “usual suspects” not having produced a single such album, whereas there are quite a few largely unknown artists who have almost made a hobby out of making them, despite never breaking into the upper end of the charts.

  • 61 One-Hit Wonders

As a result of a request from the audience, we produced a set of One-Hit Wonders, always a risky category as you can end up mired in novelty songs, which are generally uninspiring out of their context.  However, not only did we manage to assemble a good set of tracks, we had a large audience as well, with up to fifteen in the cavern and a top number of 33 listeners – the first time I can recall where we had more listeners outside the cavern than on the plaza.  We also had a new recruit to the team, Root Beer, who shared announcements with us.

The preshow was all Mal’s doing, and a right good mixture it was too

That’s The Way That It Is Uriah Heep The Best Of…Part 2 1998
Would the Christians Wait Five Minutes? The Lions Are Having a Draw Man Man 1970

The show itself had more tracks than usual, as one-hit wonders are generally of the 3-minute single format, so we ended up with 30 tracks.  Actually we ran over time a bit, but nobody complained, not even the neighbours.

  • One-Hit Wonders

As per request of a couple of shows ago, Sunday’s show will be featuring various one-hit wonders, complete with the usual background info on them. And possibly a few surprises in there, though we did try not to include too many novelty songs, which alsmost by definition end up making their artists one-hit wonders, if they make it into the charts at all.

  • 60 Playing The Game

Radio Free D’ni’s 60th show coincided with the 7th anniversary of MOULa’s revival, and in honour of that we had a selection inspired by playing the game – adventure games mostly, and the various Uru incarnations especially.

The preshow was selections from the end of the ‘D’ section and the start of ‘E’ from my CD stash.  The Nightfly is on later than we are and has to deal with much wierder callers.

The show reveals my like of jazz, prog and guitarists.  This should be no surprise by now.

The postshow had some of the tracks that almost made it into the show.  Rush’s Farewell to Kings is obvious, Places to Go is what we all have, the Cannonball is found in Teledahn (in the gun) and could also be the imitation stone of Sisyphus in the Path of the Shell.  Several places could be a Temple of the Winds.  Running on Three is what it feels like when you can’t quite solve a puzzle and Available Light is needed in Kadish Tolesa, in the moon room and the pyramid.

  • Connections II: the connections

    The connections from the show:

Dire Straits (Terry Williams on drums) → Rockpile (Williams with Dave Edmunds) → Dave Edmunds → Dave Edmunds with Mark Knopfler (who was the front man of Dire Straits) → John Fogerty with Mark Knopfler (Kenny Aronoff on drums, who also filled in for Dave Mattacks a few times) → Steeleye Span (Dave Mattacks on drums) → Chris Rea (Dave Mattacks on drums) → Chris Rea with Elton John → Olivia Newton-John with Elton John → Olivia Newton-John with ELO → ELO (Jeff Lynne guitar/vocals) → Traveling Wilburys (Jeff Lynne guitar/vocals, Jim Keltner drums) → Pink Floyd (Jim Keltner drums on 1987 album).

Back to Jeff Lynne: first solo album produced by Dave Edmunds → Dion (1989 album produced and guitars by Edmunds, Terry Williams drums) → Man (Terry Williams drums), bringing us back to our starting point.

Back to Dave Mattacks: Fairport Convention → Richard Thompson (John Kirkpatrick accordion) → Steeleye Span (Kirkpatrick accordion, Maddy Prior vocals) → Jethro Tull (Maddy Prior vocals on 1976 album).

And the next bunch of connections will therefore most likely be focused on Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull.

On a side note, Terry Williams and Dave Edmunds have worked together since 1970 when Williams replaced Bob „Congo“ Jones on drums with Edmunds’ band Love Sculpture, and has played on many Edmunds solo albums, as well as with the other members of Rockpile (Nick Lowe, Billy Bremner). We would have loved to explore those connections a bit further, but since we only have 2 hours of air time per show, we stuck to the stuff farther afield. Edmunds also produced the first demos of Motörhead, and there will be quite a bunch of seemingly weird connections from Jethro Tull, some back to the English Electric Folk scene, which could well rate its own Connections show in the future.

And an apology to all those who want more Connections shows (we heard you…), these shows unfortunately require a particularly large amount of research, so they will be spaced out a little. There will be more, though.

  • 59 Connections pt. 2: The Edmunds Empire

Our second set of Connections showing the often complex interactions in world of Rock, this time centred on Dave Edmunds. Pre- and post-show are tracks by artists we also see during the show proper. And I will post a follow-up of the track of connections we followed this time. We topped out at 25 listeners, so that was not too bad.

  • Connections II: The Edmunds Empire

  • 58 A Bad Year for Good Music, part 1

Yes, 2016 was notably bad for the passing of many fine musicians who have enthralled and entertained us as we grew.  So many, in fact, that it will take several shows to mention even a few of them.

In this show we concentrated on just five: Bernie Worrell (P-Funk and Talking Heads amongst many others), Keith Gemmell (Audience and Stackridge, amongst others). Leon Russel (too many to mention), Greg Lake (ELP mostly) and Rick Parfitt (Status Quo).

Preshow was put together by Ed from earlier shows – I didn’t have time to do it myself, for reasons that are clear to those who listened to the show.

  • A Bad Year for Good Music

Over the year 2016, an unusually large number of great musicians have passed on. This show will try to commemorate them, and point out why they were important to today’s music. Hint: much of today’s pop and Rock music would not exist had it not been for them…

    See you in the Cavern,
